Municipality of Chemainus
Welcome to the website of the proposed municipality of Chemainus. The town of Chemainus is best known for its transformation in the nineteen-eighties from a primarily industrial community into one that includes a major tourism component. This revitalization was initiated by inviting well-known artists to paint vibrant murals throughout the town,
the presence of which sparked more projects, leading to the wonderful arts-based destination that we know today.
What many people might not be aware of, though, is the highly unsuitable system of municipal government that hampers the economy of the town. Please take a look at our problems page to see a few of the challenges facing Chemainus under the current system, and then visit out petition page to try to do something about it.
Municipally, Chemainus is a part of the District of North Cowichan, which includes most of what is often regarded as the City of Duncan.
The actual City of Duncan, as a municpality, includes only a few blocks of the urban area usually regarded as "Duncan".
Most of urban Duncan is actually part of the North Cowichan municipality.
Our municpality therefore caters mainly to the needs of Greater Duncan - in fact, Chemainus currently has no representation at all on its municipal council.
On this website, you will be able to see how a group of concerned citizens plans to address these pressing issues. Please sign-up with us, contact us, express your opinion on our forum or help with our petition.
